The people of Teso, like most of sub-Saharan Africa need no convincing about the effects of climate change. Old rainfall patterns have been disrupted such that traditional crops and methods no longer work, leading to difficulties in knowing how best to farm the little land they have. Drought and flood can bring instant destitution to households and to whole communities.
TDT keeps a reserve to provide immediate aid in such circumstances while our other activities seek to build community resilience to such events.
TDT also runs a continuous relief project jointly with Kumi Hospital which allows the very poorest to receive vital treatment which they couldn’t otherwise receive. All but the most basic healthcare has to be paid for in Teso. The Kumi Compassionate Fund project is carefully audited and is run by the social workers as the hospital to ensure the resources reach the most vital cases.
