Right in the North of Teso, in the District of Kapelebyong, Apopong was always in the front line of the violence that came in waves, in the civil war, when the Lord’s Resistance Army came in waves from the North, when heavily armed Karamajong fighters came at night to steal cattle. As a result the area was abandoned for many years as its inhabitants sought refuge in camps for people displaced by the violence.
In the last decade however, people have begun to return to the land, but the going is hard, many have forgotten old ways and even when the old ways are remembered they often don’t work as changed climate and new diseases battle against the local farmer.
Pentecostal Assemblies of God North Teso have been TDT’s partner as we have sought to help these farmers establish new lives, providing training in savings, new and diversified crops and getting people to think in terms of family businesses.
