Okerai A Community Development

A three year programme was completed in 2024 for the community at Okerai A in Kapelebyong.

150 households were enrolled into five savings and loans groups, training them in the financial management which would enable to use the groups for building savings as well as borrowing for specific projects and needs.

360 farmers were trained in vegetable production and conservation agriculture and provided with resilient cassava cuttings to enhance the resistance of cassava crops and improve farming profitability.

120 farmers were training in farming as a household business (as opposed to subsistence) and 150 farmers were taught the fundamentals of livestock management to allow diversification of household and community farming.

The community were also trained in Disaster risk reduction and so formulated planning to build the resilience of the community to drought and flood, particularly including tree planting and fuel efficient cooking into their household practices.

The pictures show a typical household compound, a vegetable garden growing crops under shade to maintain moisture, and a young man who had established a successful business drying fruit and packing in small bags to sell as snacks at the local market.
