Odiding Community Development

This project managed by PAG North Teso is aimed at improving local farming skills, knowledge of climate smart agricultural practices and farming as a family business, with the overall aim of improving food security in households through increased production levels as well as increased income levels from farming production and participation in VSLA activities. The project is based on a highly successful model completed with the community in Apopong Village in Kapelebyong also in northern Teso. Communities learn about livestock husbandry, farming as a business, cultivating kitchen gardens and climate smart and good agronomic practices such as intercropping, mulching and tree planting. Village Savings and Loans Groups are also set up in the communities. The project in Odiding has 312 direct beneficiaries and is now in its final year. A full evaluation will be done at the end of the project however some highlights that can be seen already are; increased availability of food meaning households can now eat 3 meals a day, diversification in income sources for households, 11 VSLA groups have been set up and 44 of the VSLA members have set up new small businesses, one VSLA group have been able to invest in hiring a teacher and some tools to teach local unemployed youth carpentry skills.
